Marketing in a Recession

Companies large & small are looking for answers on what’s the best way to market their business in a recession. Here are a few to get you started:

  • Setup a simple blog: If you don’t already have a simple blog set up you are missing free organic search engine marketing opportunities. Blogging is a simple way to get up-to-date information about your business to your customers or potential clients.
  • Be social - Go where the people are: Joining social sites like Facebook & Twitter is a quick and cost effective way of expanding your audience.
  • Join Forces: Develop relationships with other companies to pool resources and refer internally.
If for example you own a nail salon team up with a hair salon for a packaged rate.

  • Set your eye on a goal: Do you have a plan in place? All of your marketing pieces should be one cohesive unit that work towards a larger goal. Have you updated your strategy & marketing plan to adjust for changing times?
  • Don’t get ugly with your advertising: The best way to spend your marketing time & money most effectively is to make sure that you are putting your best face forward. Are you losing business to your competition because of the quality of your website?
  • Take care of your customers: Remember to thank your existing customers, often times your best clients come as referrals from already satisfied customers. Build a loyal base of followers and use your client base to drive referrals.

The truth of the matter is someone somewhere is buying what you’re selling - the question is are you reaching them.

Have you ever seen a dentist with ugly teeth?

Something funny I have noticed in the design world is that often times web designers have outdated websites and graphic designers hand you a business card with the disclaimer (sorry I changed my phone number). I’m not exactly sure what it is that creates this phenomenon. My assumption is that we get too busy working on client projects that we don’t stop to make the time to update our own marketing material & website.

I am not sure how many industries this problem carries over, because I have never thought to ask. My dad is a Chiropractor in Irving and I know that he has this problem. It’s pretty common for him to come home and say "man my back hurts, I meant to have the other doctor adjust me but I got too busy."

So, whether this is an excuse or just an observation the purpose of this post is to get the ball rolling on having a blog for our company. We have setup, designed & even maintained several blogs for clients. It’s often the first bit of advice I give to client’s looking to market locally. It’s been on the whiteboard of to-dos for DBD (Dallas Business Design) for about 2 years. Setting up the blog is step 2 in what will be a long process of taking our own advice and implementing everything that works for our clients into our internal marketing campaign.

What was the first step do you ask? Twitter - if you don’t already know what twitter is there will be a post to follow shortly. And if you do you can follow us @DallasDesign.

Do you find this to be an issue in your business?
